WHAT IS AMEKAJI?
Amekaji, also known as American Casual, is the term used to describe the Japanese interpretation of American popular styles. Just like American fashion, the style has grown and changed with the times since its introduction in the 1960s.
The Name
Amekaji (アメカジ) is a shortening of the words "American inch and "casual."
Style Basics
Although the term can refer to any kind of American inspired fashion (see Amekaji Gyaru), Amekaji most often describes men's fashion.
Originally introduced as Japanese Preppy in the 1960s, the style has continued to pull form popular men's fashions in America, giving it a unique Japanese flair.
Currently iterations of Amerkaji mostly focus on whitewashed jeans, often cuffed and baggy, button up shirts, flannels, leather boots, and occasionally hats like fedoras or news caps.
