Clothing: The Hoodie

In the hood-ie!

A "hoodie", simply put, is a sweatshirt with a hood. The word "hood" has been derived from the Anglo-Saxon word "hod" that translates to the English word “hat”. This garment style first found its roots in Medieval Europe, with monks wearing the hooded robes and a chaperone wearing a hooded cape.

In modern times, the hoodie was first produced in the United States in the 1930s thanks to the company called Champion Products, which began as Knickerbocker Knitting Company in 1919. They developed the hoodie after they came up with methods to sew thicker materials together. The hoodie was originally made to protect the athletes and laborers from the elements. Champion also produced sportswear for high schools and colleges. They worked with high schools to determine their apparel needs and came up with the hooded sweatshirt for football players and athletes to wear in the bad weather.

Like many sports attires, the hoodie soon became a fashionable garment worn by the masses. It became popular in the 1970s when the hip hop culture was a rage in New York. The most iconic appearance of the hoodie was when Sylvester Stallone donned it in “Rocky”. At the same time, the hoodie became popular in Geek culture as well when Mark LoGiurato introduced the sweatshirt to the companies such as the Software Bottling Company. Universities also chose the logo-ed hoody as their official garment around the same time. By the 1990s, the hoodie was a raging hit. It also became a center piece of several fashion collections. Fashion houses like Tommy Hilfiger, Giorgio Armani and Ralph Lauren used the hoodie as a primary component of their collections.

However, the hoodie started becoming associated with anti-social behavior and lawlessness, the wearing of which was treated synonymous with criminals. So much so, there are laws against wearing hoodies in countries like Australia and some parts of the UK in a shopping zone to keep criminals out.

Unlike many garments the hoodie can only be a casual wear. There are three types of hoodies. Pullover, zip up and half zip. Hoodies can be worn with jeans, joggers or even shorts depending on the style.
