The Full Moon Party held in Thailand is as exciting as it sounds. Drinks, fireworks, and music don’t even begin to surmise the kind of fun that awaits party-goers there. Held in a small town called Haad Rin located in the southernmost tip of Koh Phangan, it attracts between 3,000 and 10,000 visitors every year. This event is so successful that there are now Half Moon, Full Moon, and even Black Moon parties. Full moon party is usually held during certain days in April, May, July, and August. The first Full Moon party, held at Paradise Bungalows to thank about 20-30 travelers, gained so much fame through word of mouth, that the event has now expanded into many others days, attracting tourists from all over the world. The party is known to carry on until the sun rises the next day. Bars on the sunrise beach of Haad Rin town stay open and play psychedelic trance, R&B, drum and bass, dance and reggae music. This modern event has now become an essential part of the itinerary for many travelers to South East Asia.
This epic event began as a small gathering of friends in the 80s and grew into one of the largest and most notorious parties on the planet. Now more than 30,000 party-goers, wearing body paint, hit the beach in
Haad Rin to party till sunrise and drink from buckets! The party peaks at sunrise and then tapers off gradually at late afternoon. Many party-goers literally sleep where they fall, still clutching their party buckets! But not everyone enjoys all the noise and rowdiness. Drugs, theft, and injuries are commonplace. Don’t get the wrong impression though, it is generally a good-natured event. Come to think of it, putting tens of thousands of intoxicated people into one place is bound to generate some bad situations.
Revelers start gathering on the beach by the afternoon. When the round yellow moon appears, the beach explodes with music, dance, drinks and fire shows. Frenzy begins as the evening progresses. MCs take the stage and the party begins. There is something for everyone here. Trance, techno, drum and bass, commercial dance and reggae, no one is disappointed. Jugglers and fire eaters entertain the crowds as the night goes on, and with the brilliant fireworks the party atmosphere is pure heaven. Party-goers arm themselves with fanny packs, enjoy a couple of pre-moon drinks and make their way to the beach. The fun starts with the artistic ritual of covering themselves with neon paint
There’s no strict costume requirement for this party. Body paint is one desirable feature. Other than garments like
bikini tops,
shorts, and
flip flops, beach cover ups are appropriate for this event. Wear appropriate footwear, as there might be broken bottles and cigarettes all over the beach. Dress in brightly colored clothes. You can also choose to wear neon bunny ears, green masks or neon flower crowns. Whatever you wear make sure you are comfortable enough to spend the entire time partying.
