Costume events are events that let you be whatever you want, that let you embrace the other side of you and celebrate what you believe in. One such event is the UFO festival of Roswell, New Mexico. Roswell welcomes UFO enthusiasts and skeptics to join in celebration of the much-debated incident that many believe involved a UFO crashing on a ranch near Roswell.
This festival is inspired by an incident that happened in mid-1947.
A United States Army Forces balloon crashed at a ranch near Roswell, New Mexico. Looking at the structure, people initially thought it was a ‘flying disc’. Soon the military clarified that it was merely a conventional weather balloon. Interest subsequently waned until the late 1970s when UFOlogists began promoting a variety of elaborate conspiracy theories, claiming that one or more alien spacecraft had crash-landed and that the extraterrestrial occupants had been recovered by the military, which then engaged in a cover-up. Some people even came out with ‘proof’ that they had seen alien bodies and alien wreckage. Since then this day has been commemorated as the Roswell UFO festival.
The 24th annual event took place on July 5 – 7, 2019 and was attended by thousands of sci-fi and alien enthusiasts. Events included the Alien Human/Pet Costume Contests (including cosplays), Electric Light Parade, renowned speakers and UFOlogists, Planetarium Laser Light Shows, crash tour sites, Mars 2147 attraction, and much more.
The event also hosts many free family-friendly activities that include alien making, crazy alien hair, alien masks. There are many sister events to the Festival in Roswell the same weekend. These events feature vendor booths, comic book collectibles, cosplays, gaming workshops, among others. It also includes a Sci-Fi Film Festival and Steampunk Ball.
