Drag is slang for wearing clothing of the opposite sex. The term is generally associated with drag queens who are males dressed up in women’s clothing. They often act with exaggerated femininity and wear exaggerated make up for dramatic effects. Some of the reasons people do drag are self-expression, entertainment, or even fulfilling own desires. Drag queens vary widely by class and culture and dedication. Many of their activities involve stage and street performance, singing, dancing and participation in events such as gay pride parades, dark pageants or venues such as cabarets and discotheques.
The term drag was first recorded in 1870 and was used as reference to actors dressed in women’s clothing. It originated in Polari, a subset of English slang, meaning ‘dressed resembling a girl’. During the later 1800s,
pantomime dames became a popular form of female impersonation in Europe. This was the first era of female impersonation in Europe as a part of the performance as opposed to serious Shakespearean and Italian operas.
Drag queens are typically cisgender gay men, but there are drag queens of different orientations and genders, including trans women who perform as drag queens or faux queens. Some drag performers notably RuPaul, and gay male community in the US used the term “tranny”, however, most transgender and transsexual people considered it offensive. Personalities such as
Monica Beverly Hillz and Agnes Moore, also known as Peppermint, and Rory O’Neill as Panty Bliss are some noteworthy personalities in this field.
